Moving into University accommodation

Moving into your new home can be a busy and exciting time. So you can feel at home right away, we aim to make the process as simple as possible.

Booking your room

Undergraduate students

So long as you’ve applied for accommodation by the deadline and your place at the University of Birmingham has been confirmed, we’ll invite you to book your room within five days of A-level Results Day via email.

This email will contain everything you need to know to get started, including your allotted booking timeslot. For more information about the process, please visit our 'How to book your room' page.

Once you’ve found your perfect room, you’ll need to pay a £550 Advance Payment to secure it. Alternatively, you can pay for your accommodation fees in full.

Please note that the Advance Payment is an initial instalment towards your accommodation fees, not a deposit. This means that it won’t be refunded to you at the end of your contract.

If you’ve chosen a room with one of our partners, you may be required to pay an Advance Payment or a deposit to secure your room. They’ll be in touch as soon as you’ve completed your booking.

Postgraduate students

Booking your room at the University of Birmingham is easier than ever before. Rather than us allocating your accommodation, you can now choose the exact room to suit you, ensuring you feel at home from day one.

International postgraduate students can book rooms from January 2025.

If you’re a UK postgraduate student, you won’t be able to book your room until after 31 July 2025. International postgrad? You can book your room through the Accommodation Portal in January. Please see our ‘How to book your room’ page for more information.

How to book your room

Accommodation Pass

The Accommodation Pass is your comprehensive guide and introduction to living in student accommodation.

Containing all the essential information you'll need during your time with us, it's an important part of your student induction process and every student needs to complete it. You'll receive an email from our Student Living team as soon as the Pass becomes available (usually early September).

Your arrival slot

So you can check into your new home with ease, you must book an arrival timeslot. You can do this as soon as you've completed the Accommodation Pass.

Timeslot options will be carefully spaced out throughout Arrivals Weekend (Friday 19 – Sunday 21 September) to ensure only a limited number of students arrive on campus at any one time.

What happens when I arrive?

On your moving-in day, you should plan to arrive directly to your accommodation village within your pre-booked timeslot. Our arrival timeslots have been carefully designed to help manage the flow of traffic. It is therefore important that you try to arrive for your timeslot. We know delays can happen though. If you get stuck in traffic and miss your timeslot, don't panic. When you arrive to your accommodation site, let staff know and they will slot you in as soon as they can.

When you arrive at your village, please follow any signage and directions around entrances and exits to help us make sure we can get everybody in safely and efficiently.

Accommodation addresses and where to check in

The Vale Village

Unless you’re living at Maple Bank, your student ID card is the key to your room. You can therefore move straight into your accommodation if you have this. Our friendly Welcome team will be on hand to support you if there's anything you need.

If you’re a UK student, you should receive your ID card in the post in the weeks before your arrival. If you haven’t, you can collect an access card from your village’s reception during Arrivals Weekend. International student? You will need to collect your student ID card once you arrive on campus.

Don’t forget to bring photo ID and your student number with you; we can’t give you your student ID, access card, or room keys without it. Proof of booking is also helpful.

Shackleton

If you require an access card or need to collect your student ID card, please visit Shackleton reception (B15 3SX) on arrival. This is open 24/7, so you won’t have to wait to access your room.

Aitken, Chamberlain, and Elgar Court

Your arrivals reception is based at Mason lounge, adjacent to the laundrette (B15 2RU). You can collect your student ID or access card from here between 11:30 and 18:00 on Friday 20 September or 7:00 and 22:00 on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 September. Outside of these times, please visit our 24-hour reception at Shackleton (B15 3SX).

Please note, if you're living in Mason Block 4, you cannot check-in until Saturday 21 September, nor collect your student ID or access card until this date.

Maple Bank

You will have a physical room key. Please visit your arrivals reception in the Maple Bank car park (B15 3TE) to get yours and collect your student ID card if you're an international student.

Reception is open during peak hours. Outside of these hours, please visit our 24-hour reception at Shackleton (B15 3SX).

Please note, if you're living in Maple Bank Block 8, you cannot check-in until Saturday 21 September, nor collect your student ID or access card until this date.

Tennis Court and Green Community

Don't forget to bring photo ID and a copy of your tenancy agreement with you.

Calthorpe Court has its own car park. Our welcome team will help you find somewhere to park and unload.

Broderick House

iQ should have been in contact with you directly about booking an arrivals timeslot. If they haven't, please get in touch with them at broderickhouse@iqstudentaccommodation.com. You can also give them a call on 0121 201 3160. If you arrive after 4pm on the Sunday, Broderick House's friendly security team will be there to help you settle in.

The iQ team will advise you where to park. You can also park for free at the University's North East Car Park (B15 2SA). However, you will need to catch a train from University Station to Five Ways to get back to Broderick House.

Queen's Hospital Close

Queen's Hospital Close has its own car park. Our welcome team will be available between the hours above to show you where to park and help you settle in.

Belgrave View

Belgrave View's reception is open 24/7 to help you settle in as soon as you arrive.

Belgrave View has its own car park, and our welcome team will be on hand to direct you to a space. They will also help you get settled in, along with your accommodation's friendly team.

If no spaces are available, you will be directed to park in the University's North East Car Park (B15 2SA), which offers free parking over Arrivals Weekend.

The Metalworks

The Metalworks' friendly reception team will help get you settled in.

You should have received an email inviting you to book an arrival slot from Homes for Students. If you haven't, please get in touch with them at salesenquiries@wearehomesforstudents.com. You can also call them on 0121 285 1770.

The Metalworks has a drop-and-go car park where you can unload your car. For longer-term parking, free parking is available at the University's North East Car Park (B15 2SA). Our friendly welcome team will be available to point you in the right direction.

Oak Brook Park and Battery Park

Reception is open 24/7, so there's always a friendly face around to help.

Oak Brook Park has a drop-and-go car park where you can unload your car, whilst Battery Park offers three-hours free parking in nearby Battery Retail Park. For longer-term parking, free parking is available at the University's North East Car Park (B15 2SA). There's also limited on-street parking in the local area.

Unloading and settling in

If you’re travelling by car, you’ll be directed around our villages by our student ambassadors over Arrivals Weekend. You’ll have 30 minutes to unload before being redirected to a long-stay car park on site (if you wish to stay longer). Parking is free over Arrivals Weekend.

There are a limited number of accessible parking spaces on site for Blue Badge holders. Please give us a call on 0121 415 8520 if you require on of these spaces. If you or anyone helping you move in has any mobility concerns, please contact us.

Once you have unloaded, you will be asked to move your car to one of our car parks, so we ensure everybody can move in as easily as possible. Over Arrivals Weekend, we'll have minibuses running between the Vale and the North East Multi-Storey car park on Pritchatts Road, to help you get back to helping unpack. You can then stay as long as you like to settle in and explore our Arrivals Weekend activities on campus.

The Vale

Once you have unloaded your belongings, please move your car to North East Car Park (52 Pritchatts Road, Birmingham, B15 2SA).

Parking is also available at:

  • Priorsfield (B15 2RT)
  • Park House (B15 2RT)
  • Westmere (B15 2RS)
  • Beech House (B5 7ST)

These smaller car parks are located on the left-hand side of Edgbaston Park Road, once you've exited right from The Vale. From these car parks, you can walk back to the village (ten minutes) or meet the shuttle bus at North East Car Park.

Don't worry if you can't find a space; we'll direct you to an available parking spot.

Pritchatts Park

Once you have unloaded your belongings, please move your car to Pritchatts Road Multi-storey Car Park, which will be clearly signposted as you exit Pritchatts Park Village onto Brailsford Drive.

Selly Oak

Once you have unloaded your belongings, please move your car to Edgbaston Park Car Park (Edgbaston Park road, B15 7SW).

To get here, travel down the Bristol Road (A38) towards the city centre. At the traffic lights adjacent to the Sport & Fitness centre, turn left. The entrance to the car park will be the first turn on your right. From here, Bournbrook and Jarratt Hall are within a ten-minute walk. Don't worry if you can't find a space; we'll direct you to an available parking spot.

There may also be on-street parking in the surrounding area, including Dale Road; however, we cannot guarantee availability.

Please note that parking will be extremely restricted at Jarratt Hall and Bournbrook over Arrivals Weekend; please ensure you unload and move your car as quickly as possible.

Getting to know your flatmates

If your flatmates have opted to share their details with you, you'll be able to access this information when booking your room. Don't worry if they haven't though; your accommodation's Reslife team will run activities throughout Welcome Week and beyond to help you get to know your neighbours.

You can connect with your future flatmates before you arrive through Unibuddy, an online community where students can find out more about university life and chat to their peers.

Please be aware of unofficial Facebook groups and group chats on WhatsApp and Snapchat set up for 'University of Birmingham freshers' or accommodation sites. Be cautious of who you're giving your information to and bear in mind that many of these groups are set up by promoters who want to sell to you.

Always remember to look out for the Guild of Students' official stamp, which will be included on all Guild Welcome events.
