Professor Kebschull is Chair of Restorative Dentistry and Head of the Division of Periodontology and Oral Rehabilitation in the Department of Dentistry in the School of Health Sciences. He serves as Honorary Consultant in Periodontics in the Birmingham Dental Hospital and is the current Deputy Head of Dentistry.

Professor Kebschull is the Past-President of the European Federation of Periodontology, the largest learned society for periodontology world-wide with 44 member nations. Moritz is driving the development of high-quality international evidence-based clinical practice guidelines in Europe, for periodontology and other dental disciplines. In the UK, he is senior author of the S3-level treatment guidelines for periodontitis.

His award-winning translational research in molecular epidemiology links the clinical features and molecular foundations of periodontal and peri-implant diseases. In so doing, Moritz is a module lead in the new NIHR Biological Research Centre.

As a clinician-scientist and as one of the protagonists for the development of clinical practice guidelines in dentistry in Europe, Moritz also runs major clinical intervention trials in periodontology.

To further develop the translation from basic research to the clinical setting and the market, Moritz acquired critical business skills in a top-ranked Executive MBA program. In line with this, he holds several collaborative research contracts with industry partners.

Apart from teaching periodontics and restorative dentistry in our BDS programme, Professor Kebschull leads the Advanced Clinical Dental Practice Masters programme and is the UoB collaborative programme officer for the School of Dental Hygiene and Therapy.

Biography

Professor Kebschull explains the new Vision 2030 Strategy programme for the European Federation of Periodontology

Professor Kebschull graduated as a dentist from the University of Münster, one of the hotbeds of periodontology in Europe at that time, led by Professor Thomas Flemmig, in North-Western Germany in 2004.

He subsequently defended his Dr. med. dent. research doctorate in mucosal immunology of inflammatory bowel diseases at the same university.

For his clinical specialist training in periodontology, as a quirk of the local system, Moritz spent the first three years in a specialist private practice for both periodontics and oral surgery, gaining very significant exposure in these fields and in complex oral rehabilitation.

From 2007 to 2009, Moritz was a Postdoctoral Clinical Fellow at the Division of Periodontics at Columbia University, New York, under the supervision of Professor Panos Papapanou, working on the molecular epidemiology of periodontal diseases and related systemic diseases, such as atherosclerosis.

Back in Germany as a newly minted Consultant in Periodontology, Moritz first undertook a second postdoctoral fellowship in the DFG Clinical Research Unit 208 in Bonn, a major and unprecedented programme grant in German dentistry, working on the interactions of periodontitis and atherosclerosis under the supervision of Professor Soren Jepsen, and subsequently transitioned to a clinical academic role in the Department of Periodontology, Operative and Preventive Dentistry.

Here, he gained significant traction as a researcher, with molecular epidemiological work on the pathogenesis of periodontitis and related diseases and importantly, on the current classification of periodontal diseases. Moritz' work won >10 prizes and awards, including the Miller Prize, the highest award in German dentistry, as well as the IADR Gies and Socransky Awards.

Whilst in Bonn, Professor Kebschull was awarded his formal teaching qualification, the “Venia legendi”/habilitation that included a second research-based dissertation and saw him progress to Associate Professor.

He also went to business school at the top-ranked École Supérieure de Commerce de Paris (ESCP Business School) to gain his MBA.

Whilst at Bonn, Moritz was elected to the Board of the German Society for Periodontology (DG PARO), the largest learned society for periodontology in Europe, and served for six years, until his move to the UK.

In 2018, after winning the IADR Socransky Prize, Moritz was appointed Chair of Restorative Dentistry at the University of Birmingham (UoB).

Whilst at UoB, he continued with his award-winning research that has attracted significant external funding and is based on global international collaborations.

In 2021, Professor Kebschull was elected onto the “presidential ladder” of the European Federation for Periodontology, the largest federation of learned societies in that field world-wide, and focuses on global impact for periodontology and oral health via high-level clinical guidelines and health economic assessments.

Teaching

Interview on postgraduate education in periodontology from the European Workshop on Periodontal Education

Postgraduate supervision

Professor Kebschull currently supervises international and iCASE-funded PhD students in the following areas:

  • Molecular epidemiology of oral diseases and conditions
  • Work with nucleic acid -omics profiles (DNA, RNA, miRNA, methylation, microbial signatures)
  • Multi-omics integration
He is happy to receive applications of prospective students for projects in these areas.

Research

Perio Workshop 2022 - Moritz Kebschull on non-surgical treatment of peri-implantitis
Perio Talks - David Herrera & Moritz Kebschull discuss stage IV periodontitis treatment guideline

Professor Kebschull works in molecular epidemiology, linking molecular profiles to cross-sectional clinical phenotypes and longitudinal health outcomes in periodontology, oral health and related systemic diseases.

In this, he is working with nucleic acid -omics profiles generated by sequencing or array technologies, such as DNA, RNA and epigenetic (miRNA, DNA methylation) profiles of host cells, fluids or tissues, as well as microbial signatures (meta-genomics, meta-transcriptomics).

In so doing, a major challenge is the mathematical integration of multi-omics data - Professor Kebschull’s group has generated integrated datasets of up to five different -omes for the same samples!

In addition to the aforementioned “bulk” analyses, Moritz works on interrogating periodontal and peri-implant tissues on the spatial level, linking high-throughput transcriptomics and imaging for a fascinating view into what is happening in the tissues at sub-cellular resolution.

In addition to the aforementioned work in molecular epidemiology, Professor Kebschull, as a clinical academic in periodontology and restorative dentistry and one of the protagonists of the development of clinical practice guidelines in Europe, also runs major externally funded investigator-initiated randomised trials of periodontal interventions in order to augment the existing evidence base.
