Equality, diversity and inclusion

At the School of Computer Science, we pledge to foster an equitable and inclusive environment where diversity is celebrated, and every voice is heard.

Our commitment to Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) is underpinned by our inclusivity statement; a guiding assertion which outlines our fundamental principles and commitment to building a community that is accessible and supportive for everyone.

It underscores our pledge to recognise and address the challenges faced by underrepresented groups in Computer Science, so that we may foster an environment that values diversity and promotes the success of all individuals within our community.

Inclusivity Statement

The School of Computer Science aims to be an inclusive and professional community, respectful of all participants, and free of discrimination, harassment, and bullying. We believe that an inclusive and respectful atmosphere is vital to free expression and the open exchange of ideas.

The School believes in inclusivity: a policy of including people who might otherwise be excluded, disadvantaged, or marginalised. This includes legally protected characteristics – age, disability, gender identity, race, religion or belief, sex, or sexual orientation – but can manifest along a much broader set of attributes, such as culture, nationality, first languages, seniority, and socioeconomic status.

Championing Women in Computer Science – Athena Swan Bronze Award

We take immense pride in fostering an environment that encourages and supports women in computer science. Recognising the historically underrepresented status of women in STEM fields, we are dedicated to dismantling barriers and creating pathways for women to excel.

Through mentorship programs, networking opportunities, and targeted initiatives, we strive to not only increase the representation of women in our programs but also to ensure their voices are integral to shaping the future of computer science.

Our efforts have been recognised by the Athena Swan Charter, who in 2023 awarded us with a Bronze Award.

Empowering Under-Represented Groups

Our commitment to EDI encompassing all under-represented groups in Computer Science. We acknowledge the importance of fostering a diverse community that reflects the multifaceted nature of our global society.

By actively promoting inclusivity for individuals from underrepresented genders and sexualities, as well as ethnic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds, we aim to create an educational landscape that celebrates differences and harnesses the collective strength of our unique perspectives.
